One Easy Way to Monitor and Increase your Physical Activity Daily

Image
An easy way to motivate yourself to increase your physical activity is by using a step counter. Your first response to this maybe "I don't have a Fitbit." If you have a cellphone, android or I-phone, there are free step counter apps that you can download. Our phones are with us a lot so a step counter can easily count your steps while you are walking with your phone in your pocket or your bag. 10 thousand steps per day are generally considered a good goal for healthy adults. If you currently take 3000 steps a day, you can increase your step count by a thousand per day. I think an important thing to remember is that physical activity doesn't replace exercise when we consider physiological benefits to our bodies. In other words, physical activity will not provide as much benefit to your body as exercise would. Increase your physical activity but still exercise. Your step count will also increase faster when you exercise. Some ...

More than Positivity is Needed

Image
I took this picture at the end of last year with all my P.P.E on, face shield, mask and a gown. A friend had asked me once if I ever got a picture with my P.P.E on and I said "no." He asked how I would remember this season if I never captured it. I figured it was a good idea since it would hopefully be over soon. My approach to dealing with the COVID19 saga and being a nurse working during the pandemic has been to "just stay positive." However, after the months dragged on and the fight continued I realized that "just staying positive was not enough." It came almost as  a rude awakening when I lost two people within the space of a week, they passed away. I realized that just staying positive was not going to work. I had to deal with the situation. One was COVID related and the other was not. It took a lot of faith, meditation and self-care to deal with it. I needed more than just positivity. In the past I had avoided posting about COVID on my health page be...

Physical Manifestations of Anxiety

Image
Physical manifestations of anxiety:  These physical manifestations of anxiety are examples of how our mental health can affect our physical health. Often physical health is considered more important than mental health but they each have their place and are important in their own way. It is important to know our own anxiety triggers and also learn things that alleviate our anxiety.  Triggers could be a certain thought pattern, a negative environment, a negative experience, difficulty coping with a situation in life, or a sudden life change. Coping skills  or alleviating factors could be Exercise, yay fitness! Mood stabilizing foods, Music,  An honest conversation with a friend, Therapy/counseling A slow walk through nature, Being surrounded by nature, Art and creativity, Distractions such as movies, Comic relief, funny skits, comedies e.t.c #mentalhealth #healthandwellnesscoach #healthandwellness #anxiety #copingwithanxiety #copingskills #360healthcoachi...

Health tips For First time Moms

Image
Pregnancy is one of those experiences that vary widely for people. Some women have easy pregnancies, and others have difficult or high-risk pregnancies. Mine was a difficult season in my life. Before pregnancy, I had a desire to help new moms. This only intensified when I went through my own pregnancy journey. Prior to pregnancy, I was motivated to help new moms when I encountered the research associated with postpartum depression. I thought it was possibly situational and related to the pressure of being a new mom. I have learned (learnt) that it is a combination of situational and physiological issues. I will discuss that in more detail in this post.       I have written this article to help new moms. It can be overwhelming to transition from having no baby, being pregnant, and then becoming a new mom. Emotional overwhelm can make it hard to absorb facts and remember them. Having a baby in the current social and health climate would leave most moms feel...

Things to Consider when Creating Health Goals

Image
In these times when we have been inundated with news from a pandemic and social unrest, we need to not forget about our health. Health goals are not just about exercising, sometimes I hear and see people talk about fitness goals as though they encompass all health goals.  Your health is connected to different systems in your body. Here are things to consider when making health goals.  Your Current Health Status:   To get to where you want to go, you first have to figure out where you are. A health assessment could come from your Medical practitioner giving you a clinical overview of your health status. It could also come from a health coach with a wellness or medical educational background. A rudimentary way to perform your own assessment is to basically take stock of how you feel based on symptoms you are presenting.  For example, if you have been feeling tired, you would need to go from having low energy to having enough energy to get throu...
