One Easy Way to Monitor and Increase your Physical Activity Daily
An easy way to motivate yourself to increase your physical activity is by using a step counter. Your first response to this maybe "I don't have a Fitbit." If you have a cellphone, android or I-phone, there are free step counter apps that you can download. Our phones are with us a lot so a step counter can easily count your steps while you are walking with your phone in your pocket or your bag. 10 thousand steps per day are generally considered a good goal for healthy adults. If you currently take 3000 steps a day, you can increase your step count by a thousand per day. I think an important thing to remember is that physical activity doesn't replace exercise when we consider physiological benefits to our bodies. In other words, physical activity will not provide as much benefit to your body as exercise would. Increase your physical activity but still exercise. Your step count will also increase faster when you exercise. Some step counter apps let you keep track of how often you exercise and the duration of exercise.
PRO:
You can set a goal for the number of steps that you would like to take per day. If you have not been active at all on a particular day, you can walk back and forth indoors with your step counter until you reach your desired goal. It could also motivate you to take a walk.
CON:
The the step counter doesn't always record all your steps. I would advise that you consider the step count an estimate. A simple way to determine how well your step counter is working is to take a few steps and see if your step count has increased. Another way is to download 2 apps for comparison and keep the one that is better able to count your steps.
